Buyer guide

Choose a coding assistant by how your test work actually happens.

Autocomplete is only one part of test automation. The more important questions are whether an assistant understands your framework, changes multiple files safely, runs tests, explains failures and keeps you in control.

CursorYou want an AI-native editor with agentic codebase work.Test whether generated automation respects your project patterns instead of rewriting everything.
GitHub CopilotYour team already works heavily in GitHub and common IDEs.Evaluate PR review, test generation and repo-aware changes in your existing workflow.
Claude CodeYou are comfortable delegating repo/terminal tasks to an agent.Check permissions, command execution, test reruns and whether edits stay scoped.

Five tasks I would use in a trial

  1. Refactor a brittle Page Object without changing test behavior.
  2. Generate missing negative tests from an existing happy-path suite.
  3. Convert a fixed wait into framework-appropriate synchronization.
  4. Diagnose one intentionally failing test from logs and code.
  5. Add one API validation and run the relevant test subset.

What “good” looks like

The assistant should preserve your framework conventions, ask when business intent is unclear, execute or propose verifiable checks, and make small reviewable changes. A huge diff is not evidence of productivity.

Cost is not just subscription price.Count review time, failed runs, reverted changes and the amount of context you repeatedly have to explain. A cheaper tool that creates more cleanup can cost more in practice.
